About Tabgha

Tabgha, also known as “Heptapegon” (the Seven Springs) is situated on the way between Magdala and Capernaum on the banks of the Sea of Galilee. On the hill just above Tabgha is the traditional site of the miraculous feeding of the “five thousand” with two fish and five loaves of bread. In 1922 excavations exposed the remains of an early Christian church with a mosaic floor upon which is depicted a bread basket bordered on each side by two fishes.

The modern Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes was built over this mosaic floor. Tabgha with its famous mosaic is now a popular tourist site. The Loaves and Fishes sculpture is an exacting scale replica of this famous mosaic.

About The Feeding of the 5000 Miracle

The first miracle, “The Feeding of the 5000” is the only miracle (apart from the resurrection) which is present in all four canonical Gospels (Matthew 14:13–21, Mark 6:31-44, Luke 9:10-17 and John 6:5-15).
This miracle is also known as “The miracle of the five loaves and two fish”.

According to the Gospels, when Jesus heard that John the Baptist had been killed, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place near Bethsaida.

The crowds followed Jesus on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said:
This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.

Jesus replied:
They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
“We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
“Bring them here to me,
he said.
Jesus directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
